Pearl Islands
The Pearl Islands are a mere 47km from Panama city, a 15 minute plane ride from the national airport near Albrook. The Archipelago de Las Perlas is made up of more than 220 islands and islets, only 90 of which are named. And only a few of the islands are inhabited.
You can still find pearls here. However, most of the once impressive bed was wiped out in 1938 by a severe red tide. It has been 68 years and pearls are finially being discouvered again. Thousands of pearls were found here including the 31 carat, 400 year old Pelegrina pearl owned by Elizabeth Taylor.
Discovered in 1513 by Vasco Nuñez de Balboa shortly after he discovered the “South Sea” or Pacific Ocean. Although he never actually went to the islands, he named them “Islas de Las Perlas” (Pearl Islands) and claimed them for the King of Spain. The islands were first settled by the Spanish in the 16th century and in the centuries that followed they became a well known pirate haven because of the many back bays and hidden coves.
Today the Pearl Islands are known for their picturesque waters and lush vegetation. The islands were also made famous by CBS’s Survivor. The 7th and 8th seasons were filmed on various islands in the archipelago. Tourists flock to the islands for diving, snorkelling and fishing. Researchers discovered 15 endemic species of birds live on the island and there are at least 37 beaches where turtles make their nesting period.
