The new ferry from Colon, Panama to Cartagena, Columbia began transporting passengers early this month. The much anisipated ferry can carry thousands of passengers as well as a few hundred cars and shipping containers.

The ferry offers an economic way to quickly travel between Colon and Cartagena. Round trip tickets are only $99 dollars per person, saving the average traveller between 400  and 500 dollars. For many backpackers this is going to make crossing the isamus more attainable!

The ferry will leave Colon at 6p.m on Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays and arrive 12 hours later in Cartagena, Columbia.  Tourists wanting to return to Panama can catch the ferry from Cartagena on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 6 p.m and arrive back in Colon at 6 a.m .

The introductory base fare is $99 however there are upgrades for only $119  as well as double occupancy cabins between $214 and $294 a person. There are port fees between $70 and 80 dollars in addition to the cost of the ticket. However, it is still cheaper than any other route to Columbia by hundreds of dollars!

The new ferry has the capacity to fit up to 1,484 passengers, 500 cars and 2,000 meters available for express cargo and space for 175 shipping containers.
