When in search for laid-back, arty and at times edgy nightlife, the boho-chic scene in Casco Viejo is definitely the place to be. I have been living in the old part of Panama City for over two months now and have not yet encountered another area that would beat Casco in its density and variety of places, nor in its atmosphere, for a good night out.
Depending on what kind of night one is looking for, Casco has a seemingly infinite spectrum of options. If you fancy drinks within a relaxed atmosphere, make sure to head towards Plaza Bolivar, and don’t miss out on the White Sangria at Cia Pescao, the best I have tried so far! When walking a bit further down on Avenida B on the corner to 5th Street, the interior of Havana Vieja allows you enjoy the best Mojitos outside Cuba within an authentic flair of 1950s Havanna. Last time I went they were showing Cuban pop music videos, amazingly tacky and hilarious! Located on Plaza Herrera, Mojitos sin Mojitos is always a safe bet. The crowd is laid-back, locals and travelers alike gather here for most nights of the week, they also do the best price/value burger (homemade and $6) I have found so far. Talking about safe bets, the Relic Bar at Lunas Castle is probably the best option when aiming to have a guaranteed arranque (Panamanian slang for having a blast). Being crowded every night, it is the perfect place to meet people as it caters to the backpackers that stay in the hostel but is also very popular among locals and expats living in Panama City. Definitely a highlight for me is the music selection which ranges from Indie Rock over Electro to Old School Hip Hop. If you are looking to enjoy the skyline of Panama City by night while sipping on a Cuba Libre, then Tantalo (Avenida B/Calle 8) with its breathtaking view from the rooftop bar is the right spot for you. The night club Villa Augustina (Avenida A close to Plaza Herrera)opens only on the Weekends, and in terms of location ranks among my personal top list of venues I have visited so far. The atmosphere in the impressive unrestored building which only has the exterior facades standing has an urban, arty flair and the electro parties are probably the best you can find in the whole of Panama. If electro is not your thing, and you are looking for a rather typical Panamanian night out, then my pick is La Vecindad on Avenida A, the patio of the building has been turned into an outdoor club and local Djs play the latest reggaeton tunes. Just around the corner at the end of Calle 5, located right by the sea side in an abandoned warehouse with access to the beach, La Casona has different club nights and rotating art exhibitions of local artists and probably the funkiest bathroom you can find in the city. Drinks are inexpensive and the bohemian atmosphere makes La Casona one of my favourite venue in Casco.
