Often time travelers have only a day or two in Panama City before continuing on to other destinations. With such a short period of time how does one decide what to see! With only a day here in Panama City here are some highlights to consider:

Panama Viejo – Panama Viejo is the remains of the original Panama City that was pillaged and burned to the ground by Captain Morgan in the late 1600’s. The ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are a must see in your time in Panama.

The Panama Canal – The Panama Canal is one of the modern wonders of the world and more than 1/2 off all goods produced and shipped pass through its channels. Be sure to make a stop at the Miraflores locks, located about 10 minutes outside the city, and watch monstrous cargo ships pass through.

Casco Viejo –  Casco Viejo is the second site of Panama City, after Captain Morgan and his buccaneers destroyed what is now Panama Viejo, the city was built on the peninsula and served a fortress. Forgotten and abandoned for many years today Casco Viejo is a hub of activity filled with restaurants, art galleries and museums. Take a stroll down the cobblestone streets, visit the historical monuments and plazas and gain a little insight into the Panama of yesteryear.

Panama City is city brimming with culture, history and life. If you find yourself with only 24 hours in this wonderful city consider visiting these three places to gain insight into the real Panama.
